To possess an extra language is an asset highly valued in the international jobs market. In this combined degree you can immerse yourself in the Spanish language and culture while gaining skills in your choice of subject such as photography, journalism, film or English literature.
You can join the course as a complete beginner or with an A Level in Spanish (or equivalent). Either way, by the end of the course you will have acquired a high degree of proficiency and fluency in Spanish and be able to understand and express yourself in a range of social and professional contexts, drawing on and deploying a broad range of language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing).
On the course you will also explore major themes in the history and politics of Spain and Latin America such as imperialism and anti-imperialism, religion, nationalism, the state, dictatorship, democracy and revolution. You will also examine the history and evolution of European cinema and gain knowledge of film analysis and interpretation. You'll even have the opportunity to develop your awareness of the creative aspects of film by shooting your own short film in a group.
Your third year will be spent exploring the Spanish-speaking world for yourself by studying or working in a Spanish-speaking country. You can choose to register for an approved course at one of our partner universities or undertake a work placement or teaching assistantship. Whilst on campus you will work from one of our state-of-the-art language labs which are specifically designed to help you excel in your studies.
Your first year will combine intensive language modules with an introductory module on Spanish and Latin American history, culture and society. These will provide you with a solid foundation for your remaining three years of Spanish study, leading to proficiency in spoken and written Spanish, and to a sound knowledge of Spain and Latin America in the modern world.
In your second year, language study continues to form the main component of the programme, but you will also be able to choose from a number of interesting optional modules. Recent examples have ranged from European Cinema, where you'll have the opportunity to shoot your own film, plus Spanish Writing, Translating and Interpreting. Your tutors will also be preparing you fully for your year abroad.
You spend your third year honing your language skills abroad, either on an exchange programme at one of our partner universities, as an English-language assistant in a school or college, or on a work placement in Spain or Latin America.
In your fourth year you will continue to develop your accuracy and fluency in Spanish as well as consolidating your oral and written skills. You will also develop your translation and interpretation skills. You can also choose from a range of options in areas that interest you. Recent examples students have picked from include Media Translation, Interpreting, Spanish Research Project, or a work placement in which you use your language skills in a business or community context.
